Open/Close
Anxiety is a haunting problem that far too many individuals battle. It often manifests itself in every day life; creating problems where there are none and tormenting otherwise content lives. Open/Close is one cycle of a routine depicting a process through which an anxious person goes.
Movement I (Voices) is like the beginning of a day. There is the typical bombardment that morning brings often times demanding urgency and concentration. The movement depicts several mindsets, none of which are inherently stressful, but nonetheless intensify anxiety. A crucial breaking point triggers a painful process.
Movement II (Breathing) is an attempt at preventing an imminent breakdown. There is an eerie tension carried here that ultimately gives way to a panic.
Movement III (Attack) is a panic attack. Searing headaches coupled with overwhelming activity contribute to the harsh reality of this movement.
Movement IV (Fatigue) is the comedown after the attack. The overwhelming activity subsides slowly, and as it does, a sense of unsettled weariness emerges. Despite incredible exhaustion, the anticipation of a future attack looms large.
Open/Close was written for Fuego Quartet.
